‘Gov Hope Uzodinma Sent Thugs To Flog Us’ – Said Protesting Pensioners In Imo

One Mr. Ebenezer Ibekwe, a pensioner in Imo State has told newsmen that the state government was responsible for the assault on them by some thugs while protesting for their five months unpaid pensions and gratuities.

Naija News gathered that the pensioners on Tuesday, August 4 stormed the State Government House in Owerri, the capital city of Imo to protest over non-payment of their pensions.

It was reported that some groups of hoodlums with canes formed a barricade, avoiding the pensioners from accessing the Government House’s main entrance. According to reports, the protest was the fifth in less than a month by the senior citizens who decried over nonpayment of pensions.

While the attack with cases by the thugs was still on, the retirees reportedly continued to shout and blast the state government as police operatives led by an assistant commissioner of police, AJ Moses, arrived at the scene.

Naija News learnt that the cops sent away the thugs and urged the pensioners to withdraw the protest. According to The PUNCH, the police chief told the retirees to work with the appropriate organs of the government. They, however, responded that they had exhausted all avenues of reconciliation with the government.

According to them, the governor Hope Uzodinma’s led administration was being insensitive to their plights.

“Thugs were flogging us their, fathers and mother. I pity them because they have dug their graves. At Warehouse junction, why we were coming, they accosted us and were pouring water on us. This has never happened in this state before,” Ibekwe told newsmen.

He added, “The monies we worked for and the government is sending urchins, idiots and never do wells to assault people who are old enough to be their fathers, mothers, and grandparents.”

Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has disclosed that it will release more names of National Assembly lawmakers that fraudulent took contracts from the commission without executing them.
